Classroom teaching idea

Teach a shopping budget before the worksheet

A short model, shared example, and independent check.

Model one decision

Use this fictional classroom example: You have $12. A sandwich costs $5 and fruit costs $2. The total is $7. Subtract $7 from $12: $5 remains. Explain each step before asking students to solve a new example.

Solve one together

Keep the $12 budget. A sandwich is $5, fruit is $2, and a drink is $3. Ask students to find the total, decide whether the order fits the budget, and find the amount left. Answer: $10 total; it fits; $2 remains.

Try independently

With the same $12 budget, a wrap costs $6, fruit costs $2, and a drink costs $3. What is the total? Does it fit? How much remains? These fictional practice prices have no added tax or fees.

Check and discuss

Answer: $11 total; yes, it fits; $1 remains. Ask students to show or explain how they checked. Offer a calculator or visual subtraction support when it matches the learning goal.
