Three questions to start a career conversation
Help students move from a broad job idea to something they can explore.
Start with a concrete choice
Ask: “Would you rather work with food, tools, animals, or people?” Offer examples and invite another choice. A preference is a starting point, not a job assignment.
Model the thinking
Say: “I enjoy working with food, but I do not like a noisy space. I would want to learn more about food-preparation jobs and what their workplaces are like.”
Explore together
Ask: “Do you prefer moving around or staying mostly in one place?” Then ask: “What would you like to learn about one possible job?” Accept spoken, written, signed, or selected responses.
Choose one next step
Have the student choose one job to investigate. Find out what workers do, where they work, and what preparation the job requires. Revisit the preference after learning more.
